Videos – Afghanistan-Iran border under UNODC spotlight

Far from what one would expect to see; this is what nearly 2000 km of border with Afghanistan looks like from the Iranian side.
Not surprisingly canals, barriers, barbed wires and border towers are what separate Iran and the world’s largest illicit opium and cannabis producer and still drug smugglers mange to pass through. A serious challenge that over the years has lead the country to build one of the strongest counter-narcotics enforcement capabilities in the region with the highest rate of opium and heroin seizures according to the United Nations office on drugs and crime.
