The apparent compromise was short lived. In a blow to Theresa May”s government, top Brexit negotiator David Davis and two junior Brexit department ministers have stepped down, just two days after the government approved a plan for restarting talks with Brussels. One of the reasons behind the surprise resignation was because the deal proposes the creation of a free trade area with the European Union. In his resignation letter, Davis said such ideas would not return control of laws to the British parliament. He added that the “general direction of policy will leave the UK in a weak negotiating position.”Theresa May has replied saying her plan is consistent with her commitment to leave the European single market and customs union.SOT DLS May”I do not agree with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at Cabinet on Friday […] that deal will undoubtedly mean the returning of powers from Brussels to the United Kingdom.”A long-time euroskeptic, Davis was appointed Secretary of State for Exiting the EU in 2016.After months of reports that he was unhappy with Theresa May”s softer approach to Brexit, the last straw appears to have been Friday”s deal. The Prime Minister must now find a new Brexit secretary, as well as maintain a troubled balance between party members wanting different kinds of Brexit after the UK officially leaves on the 29th of March.May is due to address parliament on Monday.
